Day Two: Room 136, Main Building, HKU

The Department of History of the University of Hong Kong will hold PHAROS II, the second Postgraduate History Archival Research Orientation Seminar, on February 7-8, 2012.  The seminar is a collaborative venture, organized by the Department’s research postgraduates and academic staff, to provide current and prospective postgraduates in history and related disciplines with an introduction to archival research.  It is open to current and potential postgraduate students and academics from all Hong Kong tertiary institutions, and other interested individuals.  Those from Macau and beyond are also welcome to attend.
Highlights of the seminar will include:

  • Keynote address by the renowned historian Asa Briggs (Lord Briggs of Lewes).
  • Prof. Frank Dikötter of the University of Hong Kong, winner of the Samuel Johnson Prize for 2011, will speak on his use of Chinese and other sources.
  • The event will coincide with the third visit to the History Department of Prof. Chen Jian of Cornell University, Visiting Research Professor at the University of Hong Kong, who will discuss his own experiences in working with source materials drawn from multiple archives.
  • On the seminar’s first day, postgraduates and academics from the University of Hong Kong will discuss their own varied research experiences and the use of archival and non-documentary sources.
  • The second day features a workshop on outside grants available to research postgraduate students and how to apply for these, and an introduction to academic publishing.

This seminar has been generously supported by the Postgraduate Student Conference/Seminar Grant of the Research Grants Council, Hong Kong.
