Abstract
Why did Sun Yatsen become a revolutionary? This talk tries to answer this "macro" question by asking several "micro" questions: Was Sun Yatsen Hakka or Cantonese? Was he of noble descent? Was Sun Yatsen a WOG (Westernised Oriental Gentleman)? What did four years of Anglo-American education do to him? It did cross his mind that he might become a missionary; in the end, why not? Did he ever study at the Diocesan Home? How did Dr James Cantlie influence his determination to modernize China? While practising medicine at Macao, was revolution his primary aim? Why did the 1895 Canton uprising collapse even before it started? Did Sun Yatsen escape from Canton by being lowered from the city wall in a basket? After fleeing back to Hong Kong, was he ever a guest of Her Majesty in Victoria Gaol?
