The Department of History is pleased to announce PHAROS I. The inaugural Postgraduate History Archival Research Orientation Seminar will be held all day on Tuesday, 4 January 2011, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., at the University of Hong Kong. This event is timed to take advantage of the presence at the University of Hong Kong of Prof. Chen Jian, Michael J. Zak Professor of US China Relations at Cornell University and Visiting Research Professor in the Department of History. Prof. Chen will join academics from the Department of History in offering postgraduate students a grounding in the basics of archival research. Roundtable sessions will focus upon preparatory research in resources in Hong Kong; approaching research in a wide variety of repositories in different countries; and the use of non-documentary sources, including oral history and artefacts. Speakers will draw on their own wide range of experiences in pursuing research in political, diplomatic, social, economic, institutional, and cultural history in Hong Kong, Chinese, Asian, European, American, and Australian sources. The objective is to equip postgraduate students to handle the challenges and opportunities of undertaking original research. Registration is free. The focus is primarily upon historical research, but current and potential postgraduate students in all disciplines from academic institutions in Hong Kong and Macau are welcome to attend.
